Chinhoyi Stars have appointed Richard Chunga as their head coach ahead of the the 2023 Northern Region Soccer League season which starts later this month.

Chunga who was released by Chegutu Pirates earlier this year having guided them to an eighth place finish last season, takes over from Munyaradzi Charuza. Charuza will now drop to assist Chunga in the new set up.

Chinhoyi Stars spokesperson Tapiwa Chitate confirmed the appointment of Chunga saying the former Chegutu Pirates coach will be mandated with finishing among the top six teams at the end of the season.

“I can confirm that we have appointed Richard Chunga as our head coach on a one year renewable performance based contract,” Chitate said.

“Chunga has the pedigree and experience that we believe will take Chinhoyi Stars to another level. We have given him a top six finish target at the end of the season even though we are optimistic that we can surpass this target.”

An ecstatic Chunga said he is looking forward to his new challenge and promised to bring glory to Chinhoyi Stars.

“This is the beginning of another new chapter in my career which I’m looking forward to with so much optimism. I know the expectations of the team from the executive down to the fans and I promise to do my best to deliver something to their expectations,” Chunga said.

“I can’t really promise much at the moment but what I can guarantee is that I’m going to work selflessly for the betterment of the club. With unity of purpose with all stakeholders involved from the technical team, the executive, the players and the fans, we can achieve our goal.”

Chinhoyi Stars finished ninth last season and open their 2023 campaign at home against newboys OMNIA.

Meanwhile Harare City have been accepted into the Northern Region Soccer League in place of Prisons FC who pulled out.

“We write to advise that Prisons FC pulled out of the Northern Region Soccer League family owing to some restructuring exercise within their parent company,” said Northern Region Soccer League chairman Martin Kweza in a statement.

“Harare City has been accepted in the league, thereof, Harare City will assume fixtures previously slated for Prisons FC. Revised fixtures will follow.” – NRSL Times
