World football governing body FIFA has once again reiterated it’s position on Zimbabwean football showing their endorsement of suspended ZIFA president Felton Kamambo by inviting him for the World Cup in Qatar next month.

Felton Kamambo

FIFA has written to Kamambo inviting him as ZIFA president for the summit and opening match of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar on 20 November as well as the final on 18 December.

Kamambo was suspended along with his entire board by the Sports and Recreation Commission in November 2021 on allegations of abusing public funds, not acting on the sexual harassment of female referees among a litany of charges but FIFA has challenged the SRC to bring evidence.

Farai Jere, Barbara Chikosi and Sugar Chagonda later had their suspension lifted by the SRC after a ZIFA EGM pardoned them in April. However FIFA refused to recognize the EGM which thrust Gift Banda as the acting ZIFA president sticking to their position they only recognize Kamambo’s leadership which includes Joseph Mamutse as the bonafide general secretary.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) are also fighting in Kamambo’s corner rebuking overtures by the Banda led executive soon after the EGM in April.

“We acknowledge receipt of your letter dated June 14, 2022. We refer to the Fifa council decision dated February 24 2022 suspending Zifa on the basis of Article 14 paragraphs 1 and 3 of the Fifa Statutes as well as Article 16 paragraph 1, of the Fifa statutes as ratified by the Fifa Congress meeting of March 31, 2022 in Doha, Qatar,” the CAF letter to ZIFA read back in June.

CAF said the only way for them and FIFA to recognize Zimbabwe and lift the suspension on international football was to reinstall Kamambo to his position as ZIFA president and withdrawing all court cases against him.

“The above decision is clear and unequivocal that the suspension will only be lifted if: The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) repeals the decision of November 26, 2020 suspending the Zifa general secretary. SRC repeals the SRC decision of November 16, 2021 suspending the Zifa board. SRC repeals the SRC decision of December 17, 2021 setting up the restructuring committee.”

“Fifa receives confirmation from Zifa and its management, led by president Felton Kamambo and general secretary Joseph Mamutse, that Zifa and its premises are once more under their full and unconditional control and SRC withdraws the court case against the Zifa president, three other Zifa board members and the general secretary for allegedly misusing Zifa’s letterheads.

FIFA’s continued support of Kamambo comes ahead a Gift Banda led ZIFA executive committee’s Congress on Saturday which is aimed at prolonging their mandate and also deliberate on the findings of BOD Chattered Accountants audit report on the association’s finances.
