Northern Region Soccer League record goal scorer Tinashe ‘Maswera’ Balakasi says he wants to cap up his fine form in the 2022 season with a victory in the Axis Super 8 Cup Final against Golden Eagles on Saturday at Rufaro stadium.
Balakasi finished the season with 29 goals breaking a record set by Kasimero Chimbadzwa of 22 goals for ZRP FC in 2004. Having helped Simba Bhora win the championship title and gain promotion into the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, Balakasi wants to exit the Northern Region Soccer League with a gold medal in the Axis Super 8 Cup on Saturday.
“This has been a fantastic season for me, I really enjoyed every moment of it and now I want to finish on a high lifting the Axis Super 8 Cup,” Balakasi said.
“I’m glad that I managed to break the record in the Northern Region Soccer League and also in the whole country of all the leagues, I’m the striker who scored the highest number of goals. I’m really grateful to God that I managed to achieve this mark.
“It wasn’t easy, if it was not because of the support of my teammates and the technical team who supported me, I would not have made it. I will also not forget the fans for their unwavering support and I would like to give them a parting gift, the Axis Super 8 Cup. I won’t forget the support that we got from the management and would also want to repay them with this Axis Super 8 Cup.”
Simba Bhora captain Brighton Tuwaya reckons that the Axis Super 8 Cup final is going to be tough one considering that the two sides had a tight contest the last time that they met in the league.
“This is going to be a very interesting match with a lot at stake. For us we want to win a double and say goodbye to Northern Region Soccer League in style,” Tuwaya said.
“We want everything that is on offer , remember we also won the Independence Trophy back in April in Masvingo and then the league title. Now we want the Axis Super 8 Cup. We know they want to avenge for missing out on the league title. They are going to throw caution to the wind and come guns blazing at us. This adds a lot excitement going into the match because we also don’t want to lose on our last match in the Northern Region Soccer League.”
A lot of entertainment has been lined for the match with musicians Sulumani Chimbetu, Baba Harare, Hwinza, Ndunge Yut as well as popular DJs , DJ Fantan, DJ Rhibe and Levels performing.
Gates are going to open at 9:00 am with live performances by artists starting an hour later. The match will start at 3pm and the musical performances will continue thereafter up to 7pm.
