Rising Zimbabwean football academy, Legends Academy is set to travel to Portugal in a fortnight for a week long training and assessment stint at Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon.

The Harare based Legends Academy is set to sign a partnership agreement with Sporting Lisbon where famed Cristiano Ronaldo rose to prominence.

Legends Academy founder and coach Farai Dhliwayo said they are taking a group of 18 Under 17 players to Portugal and those that would have impressed the Sporting Lisbon coaches, will be absorbed into the team’s youth structures.

“We are going to Portugal, Sporting Lisbon, on the 24th of September and we will spend a week training and being assessed there,” Dhliwayo said.

“This is a full training camp where all our players will be assessed. The idea is to expose them to the highest standards of football. Sporting Lisbon is like the Manchester United of Portugal. They are happy and in a good mood.At this stage, the players here have spent at least five years in our ranks, so they now understand what we are aiming at. They know our targets and what they might get in the future.

“When we started seven years ago, some of them were nine years old, but today they are around 17 and 18. It’s like a plant; you have to be patient with it, water it and make sure it grows well until you reap your rewards,” he said.

Under the arrangement, the players that impress will be intergrated into the Sporting Lisbon youth system and those that fail to make it will have another chance after two years.

Denzel Washington Mapuwa who turns out for Gweru based WhaWha is among the 18 players that will be going to Portugal.

Legends Academy have some of the most exciting talents in the country who includes Callum English Brown and Dibbellar Mapuwa who are all on loan at WhaWha as well as ZPC Kariba striker Douglas Mapfumo who had a stint at South African DStv Premiership side Cape Town City.

The Legends Academy team will be staying at Ronaldo’s Sports Complex in Lisbon.
