A unique golf tournament is set to tee off next month at Gweru Golf Club with the participating teams being represented by officials based on the cities and towns they are resident in.
Dubbed the Zimbabwe Inter-City Golf Championship, the event which is being held in Zimbabwe for the first time on 8 October at Gweru Golf Club, will be a social but competitive golf tournament where the organisers indicated some of the proceeds from the event will be channeled towards elderly homes in Zimbabwe.
Tournament Director, Ephraim Mashingaidze said they aim to develop strong golfing teams within cities, town councils,on the same foundation as has been in other sport codes such as football, volleyball & basketball, athletics and rugby.
“As you are aware that most golf courses in Zimbabwe belong to cities , town councils, so we are taking the sport of golf to their doorsteps to ensure that we encourage them to increase their participation in the sport of golf,” Mashingaidze said.
“There are strong sporting teams owned by municipalities, local boards, town councils and cities in football, volleyball, basketball and other sporting codes which compete both socially and competitively , thus therefore the Zimbabwe Inter-City Golf Championship comes in to develop golf along the same lines.
“We are very much thrilled and appreciative that the uptake from the stakeholders on this new concept has been well received. We already have a good number of cities, town councils, local boards who have indicated to field golfers from their areas to come and defend their territories at this golf battle in the “City of Progress”. The bragging rights challenges have already started with the hosts Gweru golfers, claiming they will sweep all other teams aside to lift the Trophy in their backyard come next month.
Mashingaidze said they chose Gweru because of its centrality location , but will be rotating the hosting of the tournament to other cities and towns in Zimbabwe in future so as to allow the spreading of golf development in all parts of the country as well as the excitement and ambiance that comes with this tournament brand.
“As Gweru prepares to host this progressive new golf brand, we are simply saying other cities , local boards, municipalities and towns who do not have golf courses in their backyards should start considering having golf course facilities as well so that the tournament can also be hosted in their areas in the future.
Ruwa, Hwange, Bindura, Bulawayo, Marondera, Zvishavane, Masvingo , Harare, Norton, Chitungwiza, Mutare, Chiredzi, Kwekwe, Kadoma, Victoria Falls, Chinhoyi are some of the teams that will certainly give the hosts Gweru a good run at the inaugural Zimbabwe Inter-City Golf Championship.
A floating trophy, medals, tournament prizes for both the team and individual categories will be up for grabs at the tournament.
