Simba Bhora have dominated the Northern Region Soccer League monthly awards for the second month running with their coach Arthur ‘Tuts’ Tutani and striker Tinashe ‘Maswera’ Balakasi scooping three gongs during the month of August.
Tutani retained the M & J Coach of the Month award worth US$200 and becomes the only coach to win the award three times this season. Star striker and league’s leading goal scorer Balakasi pocketed US$400 after winning the Breakfront Car Hire Player of the Month and the Tempo Tyre Top Goal Scorer of the Month award with seven goals. Both awards carries a prize money of US$200 each.
Trojan Stars goalkeeper Wilson Brown kept a hundred percent clean sheet record ending the month without conceding a goal to scoop the Global Tech Goalkeeper of the Month award in a month that witnessed high scores so far this season with 76 goals scored. Brown said it is gratifying for him to win the award in a month when the strikers have been very lethal.
“It’s every player’s wish to be recognised for an outstanding performance. It’s difficult for us goalkeepers to maintain hundred percent record in terms of clean sheets. So I’m really happy with this award because you might have a good game but end up conceding goals. So you end up losing out on the votes because of the goals conceded not performance,” Brown said.
“I would want to thank my teammates for their support. Without team effort I wouldn’t have achieved this. They helped me not to concede any goal this past month. I would also want to thank everyone at the club from the executive, the coaches and not forgetting the fans who keep us motivated.”
Backs Mambas’ Leeroy Bernard narrowly lost the top goal scorer award to Balakasi by just a goal after he found the target six times while Takudzwa Masiye of Chinhoyi Stars, Tinashe Mabvudzi of Ngezi Platinum Stars U19 Brendon Jerimani of Harare City Cubs and Jairos Kasondo of Banket United were on three goals each.
Chinhoyi Stars duo of Admire Mbulawa and Kudzanai Mukumbiri scored two goals each.
Of the top three, Simba Bhora were the biggest winners in the month of August, increasing the lead at the top by four points while Golden Eagles were the biggest losers, falling nine points behind Simba Bhora in which they conceded five goals and scored fives times.
Herentals U20 had a stuttering performance in which they didn’t move much, scoring only two goals and conceding twice in the process.
